Judith Wheeler was born in York. She began to play the Saxophone at the age of 8 and soon after started performing with local and national ensembles. Her first public recital was at the Harpenden Music Festival in 1999. In 2000 she performed at the Proms as Principal Saxophonist of the National Children’s Wind Ensemble under Philip Scott.

Judith competed in Harrogate Music Festival from the age of 12, both as a soloist and as part of various ensembles, and at 18 won the woodwind final and competed for Young Musician of the Festival. In the same year Judith also performed Glazonov’s Saxophone Concerto with York Area Schools Symphony Orchestra.

Judith went to study with Gerard McChrystal at Trinity College of Music, London, where she completed her BMus (Hons) degree in 2006. In Judith’s first year at Trinity she won the Harold Clarke Woodwind Prize. In her third year she gained a place at the Prince Claus Conservatorium in the Netherlands to study with Peter Stam.

In 2005 Judith won the Woodwind Final of the Southend Young Musician Competition with her accompanist Christina Vinson. In 2006 they went on to become quarter-finalists of the Tunbridge Wells Young Concert Artists competition. Judith and Christina perform regularly together and have recently begun to work with young composers creating new music together.

Judith is an active chamber musician and performs regularly with Indigo Sax, a saxophone quartet that aims to put the unique sound of the saxophone quartet into the public eye. They have performed across the UK, most recently with recitals at Southwark Cathedral, London and St. Nicholas’ Church, Brighton. They perform in various summer series across London, including ‘Better Bankside’ and Kensington Gardens in Hyde Park.

Judith has recently finished her Masters degree at the Royal College of Music, London, where she studied with Kyle Horch and Martin Robertson, and was supported in her studies by the St. Marylebone Trust.
